The Oscars 2017

Here we are ladies and gents, boys and girls. The results to my Oscar predictions 2017. Sorry it’s a little belated. Last year I achieved 9/12, will I beat this decent score? (Unlikely).

So, my predictions are in bold. Actual results are in a different colour.

Cinematography

Arrival

La La Land

Lion

Moonlight

Silence

1/1 lads, here we go.

Costume

Allied

Fantastic Beasts

Florence Foster Jenkins

Jackie

La La Land

Ok this one was a surprise, 1/2. Onwards and Upwards.

Animated Film

Kubo and the Two Strings

Moana

My Life as a Zucchini

The Red Turtle

Zootopia

Quite a surprising one for me really, because Zootopia while a decent movie is really nothing extraordinary. But neither was Big Hero 6 I suppose. Oh well. 1/3.

Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Moonlight)

Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water)

Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea)

Dev Patel (Lion)

Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals)

Ok we’re back on track 2/4.

Supporting Actress

Viola Davis (Fences)

Naomie Harris (Moonlight)

Nicole Kidman (Lion)

Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures)

Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea)

Easiest prediction of the whole ceremony. 3/5.

Visual Effects

Deepwater Horizon

Doctor Strange

Jungle Book

Kubo

Rogue One

This was always going to be a tough one because none stood out really. Unfortunately at this early stage I can no longer top last year’s haul, only match it. 3/6.

Production Design

Arrival

Fantastic Beasts

Hail, Caesar!

La La Land

Passengers

Good old La La Land. 4/7.

Original Score

Jackie

La La Land

Lion

Moonlight

Passengers

An optimistic and foolish prediction by me here. Sorry Boys. 4/8.

Director

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival)

Mel Gibson (Hacksaw Ridge)

Damien Chazelle (La La Land)

Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester by the Sea)

Barry Jenkins (Moonlight)

I trusted a feeling in my bones. It was wrong. 4/9.

Actress

Isabelle Huppert (Elle)

Ruth Negga (Loving)

Natalie Portman (Jackie)

Emma Stone (La La Land)

Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins)

Disappointing but predictable. 5/10.

Actor

Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea)

Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge)

Ryan Gosling (La La Land)

Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic)

Denzel Washington (Fences)

It looked like Denzel might nick it for a while, but the better performance won here. 6/11.

Film

Arrival

Fences

Hacksaw Ridge

Hell or High Water

Hidden Figures

La La Land

Manchester by the Sea

Lion

Moonlight

And out of nowhere, for the first time in years both something unexpected and the right film wins best picture. No boring Spotlight story here, the end of the Oscars was truly wild. Unfortunately it leaves my predictions at a measly 6/12 – a three guess drop from last year.

I’d just like to take one moment to talk about that ending, because it really was such a shame for both films involved. In the end the right film won, but I worry that the farce will overshadow this historic moment.

Thanks for joining me my guys.
