The makers of the Scary Movie franchise turn their hit and miss parody hands onto the fifty shades of grey book and movie. So an inexperienced college student falls in love with a rich bossiness man, but finds it a struggle to live with his sexual “quirks”.
I think we need to clear up the fact that if you haven’t seen the Fifty Shades of Grey movie you aren’t going to find this funny. Fifty Shades of Black works by literally copying each scene from the original and then stretching what happens to a ridiculous extreme. So if you are unfamiliar with the source material you just won’t get it. While this clearly is a problem for a film in that it doesn’t at all stand alone as a piece of work, if you have seen Fifty Shades of Grey it is quite funny. Sure not every joke works, and as with every Wayans film more jokes don’t work than those that do. I thought there were enough successful gags to sustain the 85 odd minute run time.
I think in more capable hands some of the joke ideas could have stretched further than just being funny, and might have actually made a statement. But Marlon Wayans isn’t exactly the first name you think of when someone mentions satire. But you know what, it was a lot more fun than watching Fifty Shades of Grey was.
