Going Clear gives us an in-depth look into the inner workings of the church of Scientology as seen through the eyes of ex-members, such as Paul Haggis. With clips of other notable members such as Jon Travolta (being creepy) and Tom Cruise (being super creepy), and archive footage of ex leader and founder L. Ron Hubbard Going Clear sets about as an expose of this notorious organisation.
Let me start off by saying that Going Clear is not for the faint hearted, it is as much a documentary as it is Horror film. The stories you hear about how people are treated within the “church” is genuinely sickening at times. But at the same time completely enthralling.
Yes, perhaps the actual filmanship is not especially imaginative, but then I think that is probably used to you focus on the stories more. Although it would be hard not to listen to the tales being told. I do also wish they could’ve actually got hold of Tom Cruise or John Travolta and grilled them, but I guess that’s quite a lot to ask for.
Overall, this is a very strong and interesting documentary. But be warned Scientology is much more sinister than you first thought it was.
